Osogbo – Confusion broke out yesterday in Osogbo, Osun State capital when men of the Zone XI of the Nigeria Police shot two students of the State University (Uniosun) over allegation of engaging in internet fraud otherwise known as “Yahoo Yahoo”.
The policemen had stormed their residence at Oke Baale area of Osogbo to effect arrest when disagreement broke out between the students and the officers who came in unmarked vehicles.
The students were said to be playing football when the policemen arrived the scene.
One of the students claimed that the policemen had been coming frequently on raid of the students after which they would make settlement with the policemen.
The raid assumed a new twist when the students refused to make settlement with the policemen and even ready to resist them.
Two students, Adesola Kazeem and Ajao Ibrahima, who are of 300 and 400 levels respectively in the department of Physics and Electronics were shot during the melee.
One of the policemen reportedly shot the students in the heat of an argument and were rushed to Jolayemi Hospital at Isale Aro for medical treatment from where they were transferred to Lautech Teaching Hospital.
The development forced the students to mobilise and chase the policemen including others who were not on the same mission.
The students then trooped to the street in protest from their school to vent their anger over the shooting and made bonfire at strategic places and junctions at Oja Oba, Orita Olaiya disrupting free movement and flow of vehicular traffic before they were dispersed by detachment of Police from the state command.
One of the protesting students who spoke with Independent said the policemen were fond of coming to harass the students in order to get money from them, saying yesterday’s encounter was not their first time to the students hostel.
He stressed before the fracas that erupted yesterday, some students had gone to lodge complaints at the State Criminal Investigation Department on the activities of the policemen who were coming around to harass them but they were told that the persons involved could not be identified by the force.
Another student identified as Adeleke said ever since he got to that hostel, policemen had always been coming on raid on the students, collect their iPad, phones and other gadgets before they would go to the station and reclaim the seized items with money.
There was traffic jam at most junctions in the state capital and most policemen at the junctions took to their heels on sighting the angry students armed with dangerous items.
The Osun State Commissioner of Police, Mr Fimihan Adeoye confirmed the incident. He said the perpetrators were not men of his command but from Zone XI.
He disclosed that arrests have been made, adding that investigation would be conducted to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book.
?Adeoye who visited the injured students said his mission in the hospital was to establish how the incident happened and identify the culprits so that the law can take its normal cause.
Adeoye said two students were injured in the incident and are being attended to now at the Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo and that’s why I’m here so as to ensure that the victims are well treated.”
He however said that he was not in a position to confirm that the injury was as a result of gun shot, adding that it was only the experts that can confirm that.
